Update!!! 6/7/2010

Well I was able to get some good work done yesterday, on the Koa Top TBM-4 neck. I am going with a Wal style headstock where it is a 2+2 with a Fender style drop down headstock. As you can see in the pictures I have used my Safty Planer to do most of the work and this is the first time using it on a neck and it worked great. Also I used the same planner for the back of the neck to taper it from the nut to the heel making it thinner at the nut and getting thicker towards the heel. Once I got that done I started on rounding the back of the neck and I got that done. The only thing left to do to the neck is clean the back of the headstock wher it transissions to the neck and give it a final sanding. I almost forgot I have to radius the f-board and add the side marker dots and drill the tunner holes. Take a look at the pictures and let me know what you think.

Play On!

  1. Nice neck! love the head stock - understated but large and gutsy. what radius are you going to use? is the koa top on your blog somewhere? wanna see wanna see! :)

  2. I am going to use a 16" radius, that is what I like to use on all my basses and because I don't have another radius block. Once the tunners are in the headstock it will look much smaller, on this neck I acutally made the headstock longer than the last time I made this neck because I did not like the tunners getting that close to the end of the headstock. That is the only think I don't like about the 2+2 headstocks of the Wal's, so I streached mine out somemore. I am so ready to be done with this bass so I can hear it and sale it and get started on something else. I am ready to see your finished, so it seems we both need to get to work on these but all the holidays and vacations this time of year does not help much as well. Great to hear from you.
