Update on the Next Bass Post Model TBM 4 string

I have started to grain fill the body with CA (thank you Michael Polutta) and you can see what the grain will look like when it is done. It is realy going to pop with all the flame and contrasting colors in the Koa. Today I will level the top out and refill any missed spots and start on the back and sides. I will post more pictures soon. Have a great day and Play On!

This weeks work.

Well Sunday i got some more work done on the 30" scale bass I am building. I got the F-board leveled and slotted for frets. On the neck I had a maple head cap on it but since the f-board is birds-eye and I had a peace big enough I planed the old maple off and added the birds-eye to the headstock. The nice thing is the grain will match up from the f-board to the headstock, should look nice. You can also see in the pics a scetch of the bass on the table top with the f-board that way I know what it will look like and what the scale of the bass will be.

Yesterday (Monday) I went and picked up some more wood for this project and some new ones I am starting on. I got some Ash that will be used for the 30" scale bass face plate which I have decided to name this bass model PLM. That way the bass will be all ash body.
I also got 10 board feet of Poplar to start a new MG-1 that will be for sale. So if you would like to get a price and reserve this bass please e-mail me at meyersguitars@bellsouth.net for pricing and options. It will be a 4 string and you will be able to choose color on body and pick-gaurd as well as hard ware and pick-ups and electronics.
Unitl next week have a good one and play on!

Mau, Thanks!

Mau,

Thank you for the comments. You are right about my head stock shape on my MG-1 (J-bass). I have always liked M-Man basses and there headstock. I like the point at the end of the head more than the round style of a Fender and that is there signature shape. So I did it for asthetics only and it may way less only by small amount.

Also I liked your write up on the Wal. To bad you live on the other side of the earth from me. I have always loved those basses and have wanted one or at least play one. Send me your e-mail sometime. Check out my latest projects and I hope to have the neck roughed out Sunday.

Thanks,
John

A couple of new prodjects that I am starting!

I have decided to start some new prodjects this weekend. The first being this bass body I have had in my scrap bin for about 8 years now and could never think of anything to do with it. It had started life back in the day as what I thought was the finale design of what is now called my TBM model (Picture of current body previousepost). Back in the day I wanted everything to have 24 frets 35 inch scales, tilt back head stocks and the body to be as small as possible. Now I have become just the opposite! So I scrapped the body years ago and was in my shop yesterday and came across it and thought "what can I do with this now" and then it hit me. Make a bass with a 30 inch scale so one day when my Son now One month old can have something to learn on and I can use it in the meantime. So that is what I am going to do. I also had a neck blank (see Picture below) I built for my current TBM project but have since decided to go with a none tilt back head stock with in-line tuners. So I had this just sitting around as well. It is a three peace Maple, Purpleheart, Maple set-up and at 30" scale it should be very stiff and should have some nice low and fast action. Now I need to mill the top of the body down and add a top to it. This was another not so bright idea back in the day. After I built the bass body you see hear I decided to try and mill it down with the wrong tools and add a top to it, BAD IDEA!! So now I am going to take the body to my Dad's and run it through his planner to level it out and I will put something back on top. I am not sure yet asto what I want to add to the top but I may go with a Poplar cap and paint the body BLUE and I may do it Trans Blue but not sure yet. I also have had this peace of Birdseye lying around for a few years and I am going to use it for the f-board. This will be the first time doing a maple f-board and I figured this would be a good place to start. I also took a picture to see if I want to use a rose wood f-board but I think I will save that for something else. I can't wait to see how this turns out because my first bass was a Fender P-Bass Squire with a short scale. I have never seen one since but I loved that bass. Amazingly enough I still have the P-bass pick-up and electronics from that bass and that is what I am going to put in this bass. I think I will build a wood soap bar cover for it, to give it a full on custom look to the bass. I am also thinking about putting a pickgaurd on this bass and make it out of Ambrosia Maple from the same log you see pictures from here. I will add new pictures as I move forward.

For my other project I am starting on. Iit will be from this book matched block of Ambrosia Maple you see here. I need to plane it down smooth and level. I may also need to add a top or bottom to this body blank to build it back up to 1.75" thick. I am still up in the air about this body but I may build my first Electric Guitar with it. Once I decide on what to do I will post pictures. The cool thing about this wood is that my Dad and his Uncle cut it down in the woods by his house and I got some and my Dad and great uncle made bowls out of the rest and the bowls looked awsome. In the picture it is hard to tell but this wood looks good, no flame or quilt but some good spalt and grain patterns. Hope you like what you see.
Also if you would like me to build you something please get in-touch with me at meyersguitars@bellsouth.net . I am only offering my MG-1 4 string at this time Bass pictured at top behind company name. I will be offering the TBM model in a 4 and 5 string in the near future. Please contact me for more details. I hope everyone had a Great MLK day I know I did because I was not working. Until next post, have a good one and Play On!!!

Next bass coming up

Here is the next bass I am building TBM-4. It has a Koa top on Ash body. The neck will be Maple with Rosewood or ebony board, not sure yet. It will have a MM pick-up move toward the neck more than normal to give a good mix of MM and a P-bass. I have not decided on electronic set-up yet may go passive or active. It will have black hardware and a gloss nitro finish. Should be a real looker and the sound should be nice. This bass and the MG-1 are the two models I currently offer. Let me know if you would like more info on these instruments.

My latest offering MG-1 4 string

This is my first post of which I hope there will be many more. I have just completed my latest design the MG-1, pictured above. This bass has turned out to be more than I could have hoped for. This is a first of many for me on this bass. I normaly build 24 fret tilt back head stock basses with figured woods through out. As of the last few years I have been more into what you see here.

This is the first time doing this style of bass as well as wood selections. The body is Poplar, neck Maple, F-board Rosewood. I hear a lot of people say things about using Poplar but I will tell you it is as good as anything out there. This is going to be my standard model and wood choices from here on out, that is how much I like this set-up. The Pick-ups are single coil wound to vintage specs. The electronics are passive (the only way to go) Volume/Volume/Tone. This is also the first Nitro finish I have done and I will not use anything else from now on.

Let me know your thoughts and I will try and post a sound clip of the bass as well. I will also post pictures of a bass I am building now and pictures of this bass under construction.
